Safety notes
> Not a safety component in accordance with EU Machinery Directive.
> Read the operating instructions before commissioning.
> Connection, mounting, and setting is only to be performed by trained
specialists.

Correct use
The GRTE18S is an photoelectric retro-reective sensor for the optical, non-
contact detection of objects, animals and persons. The sender and receiver
are integrated into a single housing unit.
The light beam output by the sender is reected by the object to be
detected. The receiver evaluates the reected light.
Starting operation
1 Check the application conditions such as size and reectance capac-
ity of the object as well as background inuences and compare with
the sensitivity characteristic curve of the GRTE18S type.
2 The green LED lights up after connecting the operating voltage.
Direct sensor onto the object to be probed. In the horizontal / vertical
direction, determine the on / o switching point (alternating display –
LED yellow) via potentiometer and select central position.
Remove object and set sensitivity to “max.”
Background is not detected: setting is completed.
Background is detected: reduce sensitivity until switching
output changes. Position object.
If object is not detected, turn sensitivity control in the direction
of “max.” until the switching output changes.
Remove object. Switching output changes: setting is completed.
Switching output does not change: background inuence
too strong. Check setting and application.
Maintenance
SICK light barriers are maintenance-free.
We recommend doing the following regularly:
- Clean the external lens surfaces.
- Check the screw connections and plug-in connections.
No modications may be made to devices.
Installation instructions
3 The included mounting nuts can be used to secure the dierent
housing versions due to the M18 thread type. Take the maximum
tightening torque from the corresponding drawing.

Bestimmungsgemäße Verwendung
Die GRTE18S ist ein optoelektronischer Reexions-Lichttaster und wird zum
optischen, berührungslosen Erfassen von Sachen, Tieren und Personen ein-
gesetzt. Sender und Empfänger sind in einem Gehäuse untergebracht. Der
vom Sender ausgebrachte Lichtstrahl wird vom zu detektierenden Objekt
reektiert. Der Empfänger wertet das reektierte Licht aus.
Inbetriebnahme
1 Einsatzbedingungen wie Größe und Remissionsvermögen des Objekts
sowie Hintergrundeinüsse überprüfen und mit der Empndlichkeits-
kennlinie des entsprechenden GRTE18S-Typs vergleichen.
2 Nach Anschluss der Betriebsspannung leuchtet die grüne LED.
Taster auf Objekt ausrichten. In horizontaler / vertikaler Richtung
Ein- / Ausschaltpunkt (Wechselanzeige – LED gelb) über Potentiome-
ter ermitteln und Mittelstellung wählen.
Objekt entfernen und Empndlichkeit auf „max.“ stellen.
Hintergrund wird nicht erkannt: Einstellung beendet.
Hintergrund wird erkannt: Empndlichkeit reduzieren, bis Schaltaus-
gang wechselt. Objekt positionieren.
Wenn Objekt nicht erkannt wird, Empndlichkeit (Drehknopf) Richtung
„max.“ drehen, bis Schaltausgang wechselt.
Objekt entfernen. Schaltausgang wechselt: Einstellung beendet.
Schaltausgang wechselt nicht: Hintergrundeinuss zu stark.
Applikation und Einstellung überprüfen
Wartung
SICK-Lichtschranken sind wartungsfrei.
Wir empfehlen, in regelmäßigen Abständen
– die optischen Grenzächen zu reinigen,
– Verschraubungen und Steckverbindungen zu überprüfen.
Veränderungen an Geräten dürfen nicht vorgenommen werden.
Montagehinweise
3 Die unterschiedlichen Gehäusevarianten können aufgrund der M18
Gewindebauform mit den mitgelieferten Montagemuttern xiert
werden. Maximales Anzugsdrehmoment ist der entsprechenden
Zeichnung zu entnehmen.
